You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand and it gives light to everyone in the house.
Matthew 5 : 14-15
Think of the last time you walked into your home to find the power out. It seems that these days the first thing we do, at least the younger generation, is to pull out the cellphone and tap the flashlight app to light up the room. After doing so, we don’t then place the phone face down, nor do we light a candle and put an aluminum bowl over it to cover it. We let the light envelope the room so that we can move forward with life at that moment. The same should be true for the believer and follower of Christ. Our light should shine through our daily lives and activities. Matthew 5 tells us of Jesus’ teaching on the mountainside when he delivered the sermon of the Beatitudes. As believers and followers of Christ, we must let our light, the light of Jesus Christ in us, shine for the world to see. How do we do this? We strive to live the righteous life as explained in the prior verses 1-13. These verses all begin with Blessed, describing the inner condition of the follower of Christ and offering the promise of future blessings for the believer who demonstrates Christ’s way of righteous living. Let us be the conduit through which the power of the light is delivered to a dark world. Lord, thank you for the promised blessings of letting you shine through us through our words and actions so that others may see you.
